Ever wonder exactly how GPS and wireless data transmissions affect your cell phone's battery life? University of South Florida (USF)'s researchers from the Location-Aware Information Systems Lab http://www.locationaware.usf.edu/ presented a paper on this topic to the UBICOMM International Conference on Mobile Ubiquitous Computing Systems. The paper on Dynamic Management of Real-Time Location Data on GPS-enabled Mobile Phones http://www.locationaware.usf.edu/pdf/Barbeau%20et% 20al.%20-%20Dynamic%20Management%20of%20Real-Time% 20Location%20Data%20on%20GPS-Enabled%20Mobile%20Ph ones%20-%20word%20version%20-%20footer.pdf demonstrates that an intelligent mobile application can significantly reduce the negative impact of GPS and wireless data on cell phone battery life. By reducing the number of necessary GPS fixes and data transmissions, the operating cost to the location-aware application service provider, and consequently end user, are also reduced.
